Iowa Historic Aerial Photography

by Robin McNeely last modified 2007-06-19 13:23

This project is funded by the IA DNR and provides digital, geographically referenced aerial photography that was first flown in 1936 for every county in Iowa .

This project began in Fall 2004 with grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Brownfields program.  The goal for the first year was to scan and georeference late 1930’s photography for 10 of the 99 most populated counties in Iowa.  The objectives for the first year were to develop a georeferencing process and to calculate an estimate of cost to create the dataset for one county.  The goal for the second year was to continue the work on the next 20 most populated counties.  Currently in the middle of the third year, work continues to finish the remaining 46 counties.  Work is also beginning on a decadal series of imagery for Johnson county with the eventual goal of all counties having photography from the 1930s through current imagery.
